Car salesman accused of attempting to bribe cop

A car salesman was remanded in custody following his first appearance in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Thursday when he was arraigned for bribing a police officer with $100,000.

Omare Grant of a St Ann address is charged on an indictment for offering money or other benefits for a public servant for act or omission in a public office, contrary to the Corruption Prevention Act.

It was shared in the court that on February 26, Grant handed over $100,000 to a detective constable and promised to give him an additional $50,000 not to take him into custody for a case of robbery with aggravation.

The Crown indicated to Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque that they are not opposed to bail, but indicated that the police are concerned that Grant resides in St Ann and would have difficulty attending court when required. Prosecutors contended that the accused man provide an alternate address where he could be monitored closely by the police.

In a bail application, Grant's attorney-at-law Shadae Bailey submitted that her client's address was previously verified by the police and that if bail was granted, Grant would report to the Ocho Rios police as directed by the court.

"The police visited this address and were told that he does not live there," the prosecutor contended.

The matter was then adjourned by the senior jurist for Grant to provide the police with another address and for it to be verified.

He was remanded in custody until March 23.
