A nine-year-old student lost her life in her Mandeville, Manchester community yesterday due to a mishap involving a garbage truck.

The child, Amara Moore, was on her way to school when the tragedy unfolded.

Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie expressed sadness over the loss. He said that based on the information received, garbage collection was in progress when the accident occurred.

"It is very difficult for me to adequately express my feelings about this," McKenzie said.

"I feel the shock, the disbelief and the grief that is radiating around Bonitto Crescent, and at Villa Road Primary School, at the unexpected and tragic loss of one of the community's youngest members," he said.

McKenzie said his heart goes out to the grieving family, the school community, and the residents struggling to make sense of the devastating loss. He noted that the matter is being thoroughly investigated.

"I feel the grief of Amara's relatives and friends as they try somehow to accept that she will not be walking back home today or ever again," he said.
